Gear hobbing, shaping, grinding and shaving machines each cut or finish gears differently. Here is how to choose, what to inspect, and what used gear machines cost in India.

Gear machines cut or finish gear teeth to a defined quality (DIN/AGMA) class. The process — hobbing, shaping, grinding or shaving — depends on the gear type and the accuracy you need.

Which gear process?

  • Gear hobbing: the most common way to cut external spur and helical gears and splines — productive for medium-to-high volume.
  • Gear shaping: cuts internal gears, cluster gears and gears with shoulders where a hob can't reach.
  • Gear grinding: finishing hardened gears to high quality classes (after heat treatment) — for precision, quiet, high-load gears.
  • Gear shaving: a pre-heat-treat finishing step that improves tooth profile on volume automotive gears.

The specs that matter

  • Max module and max gear diameter — your capacity ceiling.
  • Max face width and helix angle capability.

  • Tooling: hobs, cutters, grinding wheels and the change gears/setup — often a big part of the value.

  • Work and cutter spindle bearings: runout and noise — critical to gear quality.

  • CNC/control: supported generation, backups, and axis health under power.

Prove the quality

Ask to see the machine cut or finish a sample gear and, ideally, check it on a gear tester for profile, lead and pitch — the objective proof of the quality class it can hold.

Total cost of ownership

Budget for tooling (hobs/cutters/wheels), change gears or CNC setup, a solid foundation, 415 V power, coolant and installation. On gear machines, tooling and demonstrated accuracy matter as much as the iron.
