Surface, cylindrical and centerless grinders each finish different geometries to fine tolerances. Here is how to pick, what to inspect on spindle and slides, and what it costs.
Grinding is a finishing process — it takes parts to fine tolerances and surface finishes that turning and milling can't reach. The first decision is which grinder your geometry needs.
Which grinder for which job?
- Surface grinder: flat faces and steps — dies, gauges, plates, slideways.
- Cylindrical grinder: round external (and, with an internal head, bore) diameters — shafts, pins, rolls, spindles.
- Centerless grinder: high-volume round parts (pins, rollers, dowels) ground without centres — fast throughput once set.
- Tool & cutter / special grinders: re-sharpening and profile work.
Match the grinder to your part shape, size and volume before anything else.
The specs that matter
- Work capacity: table size (surface), or centre distance & swing (cylindrical), or throughput (centerless).
- Wheel spindle: condition, runout and bearing health — the spindle is everything on a grinder.
- Slideways / hydraulics: smooth, chatter-free traverse; healthy hydraulics for table reversal.
- Wheel dressing and, on higher machines, CNC or auto infeed.
- Coolant & filtration: grinding demands clean, well-filtered coolant.

- Manual/hydraulic surface or cylindrical grinder: typically ₹2–12 lakh.
- Larger or precision CNC grinder: typically ₹12–40 lakh.
- Large / high-precision / specialised grinder: ₹40 lakh and up.
Common wear points to inspect
- Wheel spindle runout and bearing noise — the single most important check.
- Slideway wear / chatter: run the table and feel for stick-slip; look for scored ways.
- Hydraulics: smooth reversal without shock; check for leaks and drift.
- Table/chuck (magnetic or work table): flatness and holding power.
- Vibration: grinders are sensitive — a good foundation and balanced wheel are essential for finish.
Prove the finish
Ask to see the grinder produce a part and measure the achieved size and surface finish — grinding quality shows immediately in the ground surface.
Total cost of ownership
Budget for a stable, isolated foundation (grinders hate vibration), 415 V power, coolant filtration, wheels and dressing tools, and installation/leveling. Fine finish depends on installation quality as much as the machine.
