What to check, what it costs and which brands to trust when buying a used vertical machining center (VMC) in India — spindle, ways, control, ATC and geometry.

A vertical machining center (VMC) is the workhorse of most machine shops — a vertical-spindle mill with an automatic tool changer for milling, drilling, tapping and boring. Buying used is the fastest way into capacity, provided you inspect the right things.

What to look at first (the specs that matter)

  • Travels (X/Y/Z) — must comfortably clear your largest part and fixture.
  • Table size and load — matches your workholding and part weight.
  • Spindle — taper (BT40 most common, BT50 for heavy cuts), max rpm and power/torque.

  • ATC — number of pockets and change reliability.
  • Guideways — linear (fast, precise) vs box/hardened (rigid for heavy cuts).

Price bands in the Indian used market

A note on prices: figures below are broad indicative bands for the Indian used-machine market and move with age, spindle hours, brand, control generation and condition. Treat them as ballpark, not quotes — ask us for a current price against a specific machine.

  • Entry job-shop VMC (BT40, ~600–800 mm X): typically ₹8–18 lakh.
  • Mid-size / late-model VMC: typically ₹18–35 lakh.
  • Large or high-spec (BT50, big travels, 4th axis): ₹35 lakh to ₹1 crore+.

Brands buyers trust

Common, well-supported makes on the used market include Japanese, Taiwanese and Korean builders and reputable Indian OEMs. Availability of spares and service for that specific model in India matters more than the badge — a well-supported mainstream machine beats a rare import.

Common wear points to inspect

  • Spindle health: listen for bearing noise, check runout at the taper, watch for thermal growth after warm-up.
  • Way / guideway wear: feel for stick-slip, check backlash and geometry; look for scored ways.
  • Ballscrews & backlash: excess backlash shows up as positioning error — verify with an indicator or ballbar.
  • ATC: cycle it repeatedly; confirm clean grip and re-seat.
  • Coolant, wipers, seals: leaks and torn wipers let swarf into the ways.
  • Control & electronics: power up, scan alarm history, confirm the generation is still supported for spares.

Prove the accuracy

Insist on seeing the machine under power cutting or at least cycling. For precision work, a ballbar or laser check after leveling is the objective proof of geometry — far better than a visual once-over.

Total cost of ownership

Budget beyond the sticker: foundation, transformer/stabiliser (415 V), tooling and holders, spares and installation. A cheaper machine with a worn spindle or missing tooling can cost more in the end.
