CNC Machine Foundation & Installation Guide
A used CNC machine only holds accuracy if it is installed right — correct foundation, clean 415V power, level setting and a settling period. Here is the practical checklist.
A precise machine on a poor foundation cuts poorly. Getting the foundation, power, leveling and environment right is what turns a good used machine into an accurate, reliable one. Plan the site before the machine arrives.
1. Foundation and concrete
- Follow the machine maker's foundation drawing for depth, rebar and grout pockets — a heavy VMC/HMC or VTL needs a deep, well-cured slab.
- Concrete should be fully cured (typically ~28 days for fresh work) before you set the machine.
- For heavy or vibration-sensitive machines, use the recommended anchor bolts and grouting; lighter machines may sit on leveling/isolation pads.
- Isolate from neighbouring presses, forging hammers or heavy traffic that transmit shock through the floor.
2. Load and handling
- Confirm the floor and any crane / hoist can take the machine's weight, including off-centre loads (e.g. a VTL table).
- Plan the rigging path — door widths, aisle turns and floor loading along the route.
3. Electrical power (India)
- Most machines run on 415 V, 3-phase, 50 Hz. Imported machines built for other voltages need a step-up/step-down transformer.
- Provide a stable, clean supply; add a servo stabiliser / voltage stabiliser where the grid fluctuates, and correct phase sequence and earthing.
- Size cabling and the isolator to the machine's full-load current with margin; a dedicated earth pit to spec protects the control.
4. Compressed air, coolant and chips
- Supply clean, dry compressed air at the specified pressure/flow (tool clamp, air blast, seals) — add a dryer/filter if your air is wet.
- Plan coolant delivery, filtration and disposal, and chip evacuation (conveyor, trolley, bins).
5. Environment
- Keep ambient temperature stable — swings cause thermal growth and drift on precision work.
- Control dust and humidity around the control cabinet; provide adequate cabinet cooling/ventilation.
- Leave the maker-specified service clearance on all sides for maintenance and door swing.
6. Leveling and commissioning
- Level the machine with a precision spirit level / electronic level to the maker's tolerance, adjusting the feet/wedges.
- Allow the machine to settle, then re-check and re-level after a short running-in period — new grout and a fresh install move slightly.
- Run the warm-up cycle, cycle all axes, check for alarms, and verify lubrication reaches the ways.
- Where accuracy is critical, verify geometry with a ballbar or laser after leveling.
7. Before it leaves us / arrives
- Confirm you've received the foundation and utility drawings and prepared the site to them.
- Have the transformer, stabiliser, air and coolant ready so commissioning isn't stalled.
- Keep the machine's backup files (parameters, ladder) safe from day one.

- Foundation cured to the maker's drawing
- Crane / rigging path confirmed for the weight
- 415 V 3-phase supply, earthing and (if needed) transformer/stabiliser ready
- Clean dry compressed air available
- Coolant and chip handling planned
- Stable-temperature, low-dust location with service clearance
- Precision level on hand for setting
